Todd R. and first babysitting

We spent most of this week re-adapting to living in NYC. Aidan's friends were thrilled to see him at daycare, and the rest of us got back into the swing of things at work and at home. On Thursday, there was another snowstorm, but just enough to frost the world with beauty for a day, and to surprise Kiana with snow melting on her eyelashes when we walked to pick Aidan up from daycare that day. We are glad that we didn't miss all of it!

Wednesday, Laurie babysat Kiana for the first time. She has been babysat by Grandma Ruane once before, but this was her first time outside of the family! It went pretty well! Laurie came over just before noon, got acquainted, and then pushed her over in a stroller to pick up Aidan. Rather than go the park like we usually try to, they came straight back home afterward: Aidan, like the wonderful big brother that he is, told Laurie that we needed to come home right away, because Kiana needed milk! I didn't get much done in the hour or so I had off, but I was glad that Kiana was able to really start adventures in babysitting! (Laurie is pretty excited that I'm finally willing to give her up for short periods of time, too!)

Aidan is budding in his photography skills: not only did he take this one of his toes and his bus, but he also took the one of me, Daddy and Kiana! He is getting quite good at it!

Aidan is also being a wonderful daddy to his baby shark, "Todd R." Aunt Frances bought this baby black-tipped reef shark for Aidan when he was a newborn in San Diego, CA. It lived a quiet life in a pile of stuffed animals on top of Aidan's book shelf for a long time. However, in the last month or two, it has taken over Polar Bear and Baby Beluga's spots as Aidan's favorite stuffed animal and "baby." He even - for the first time - named it! We love the Todd Parr books (from "I love you" to "Do's and Don'ts" - they are wonderful!"), and after reading his "I love you" book (which we bought for Kiana and opened before Christmas), he named his shark "Todd R. Ruane" (normally to be called "Todd R."). Aidan LOVES this shark. According to him, Aidan is his Daddy, I am his Mommy, and Daddy is his uncle (he was his grandpa, but then Aidan decided that Grandma and Grandpa Ruane are his grandparents and Alex was his uncle.) Aidan takes very good care of Todd R: he "nurses" him to sleep, puts him down for naps, tells all of us to be quiet while he sleeps, and tells us all to make sure we keep him safe. It's very sweet!

This weekend was cold, and we kept inside for as much time as possible. Saturday, we went to Family Clay Day at the downtown community center - Aidan was thrilled to finally be back on his beloved trains (a good reminder of why we like living here!). Sunday, we attended Aidan's friend Virginia's 3rd birthday party: we enjoyed the brunch and catching up with friends. At one point, I found Aidan in the other room with Rowan and Olivia playing "baby": Olivia was the baby, Aidan was the daddy, and Rowan was the mommy; Aidan then told them all very seriously: "But I have another baby! His name is Todd R., and he is a SHARK!" :) After the party, we chilled out: Daddy had slept in in the morning, so he let Mommy have a nap, and then Daddy hung out with the kids while Mommy cleaned the house (hooray!).

Tonight, Aidan passed out easily about 8PM while Kiana stayed committed to her recent trick of catnapping and then staying up till at least 10PM: it's been hard to adjust back from vacation!
