Happy 7th Anniversary, Mommy & Daddy!

Sunday was Mommy and Daddy's 7th wedding anniversary! Wow: we've officially been married (7 years) for longer than we were together before being married (6 years)! We met as undergraduates at Cornell in 1998 (looking back it feels like we were just kids!), choose graduate schools near each other in California (San Diego and L.A.), got engaged, married, and then had two beautiful kids while also moving back across the country (again!) to NYC: it's been quite a journey!

Today there are a lot of transitions going on in our lives, which is stressful. I am looking to start out in my own career, we are trying to find a place for Kiana to do go daycare half days during the week (so I can work!), Alex is still figuring out how to balance the many opportunities and demands of his (always fascinating but always busy) career, Aidan is getting ready to go to pre-K for the first time in the fall, and there are the normal kid transitions we are preparing for (getting bunk beds, transitioning Kiana out of our bed, continuing to transition Aidan with underwear at night, transitioning Kiana into a bottle/sippy cup (which she actually DRANK not just played with for the firs time this week!!!), etc. etc. etc.). There is a lot of chaos - not the least in our (sometimes shrinking feeling) Manhattan apartment! Despite all of this, both of us are happy that we are still so sure about each other, that despite the madness of the world, we are committed to being together, valuing each other, and figuring out everything together. We even remember our marriage vows!:

"I promise to give the highest priority to the kindness, tenderness, and gentleness that the connection we are blessed with deserves, striving to redefine our ideal each day, and with God's help, growing and adapting together, wherever our journey takes us."

Having small kids makes it tough to make each other the highest priority, but we are working on it, while also prioritizing them. It's an adventure. But we're making it through.

We had a really wonderful day celebrating on Sunday. Grandma and Grandpa Ruane drove down for the morning and watched the kids while we went out for brunch (strawberry and banana pancakes for Alex, spinach and goat cheese omelet with a side of sausage for me, mimosas for both of us!). Grandpa played with Aidan at the park while Grandma cleaned our house while Kiana slept! (THANK YOU!) Then we came back, and all shared some of Grandma's homemade blueberry pie (DELICIOUS!) before they drove back home. After that, we took the kids downtown to check out Pridefest - the street fair part of gay Pride week in NYC. It was exciting to participate even a little bit in the festivities, especially given the historic occurrence of New York state legislature approving equal marriage rights just two days ago (June 24th). After we came home, Laurie gave us a couple *more* free hours of babysitting while we went out to dinner and drinks for Mexican food (fajitas for Alex, a chimichanga for me). We returned to tired kids who passed out by 8:30pm. It was a wonderful day!
